Chalco to build smelter in Guangxi

Aluminium Corp. of China (Chalco) is considering building an alumina refinery in the Guangxi region of southeastern China. The state-owned metals-trading house Minmetals and the regional government would assist in the construction.

The area is home to Pingguo Aluminium, a subsidiary of Chalco.

The plant would have an annual refining capacity of 800,000 tonnes initially, with potential to expand, owing to burgeoning alumina demand.

Chalco is reportedly open to the possibility of foreign backers.
