CANMET signs European deal

A 3-year arrangement allowing for the exchange of information on environmental technologies has been signed by CANMET (Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology) and the Commission of European Communities (CEC).

CANMET, the main research and development arm of Energy, Mines and Resources Canada, says the exchange will help the federal government achieve goals outlined in its Green Plan and improve the competitiveness of Canada’s mining industry.

Procedures will be established regarding the exchange of information on technological aspects of mining, mineral processing, metals recycling and waste reduction. Environmental information related to these fields will also be available.

The arrangement will give CANMET access to information arising from a $150-million research and development program being carried out by CEC in metal and mineral recycling.
