Cambior benefits from Omai output

The Omai mine in Guyana helped to push gold production for Cambior (TSE) during the first nine months of 1993 to 381,122 oz., a 42% increase compared with the same period last year.

The open-pit mine, in production since January, yielded 61,738 oz. during the third quarter. Cambior has a 65% interest in the project but is currently accounting for 100% of production under a development payback agreement with Golden Star Resources (TSE), a 30% owner, and the Guyanese government, a 5% owner.

During the third quarter, production at the Omai mill averaged 13,025 tons per day. The grade of the material milled averaged 0.057 oz. gold per ton. The company says both the tonnage milled and grade for the quarter are in line with feasibility study projections.

Of the three months during the quarter, July had the lowest tonnage milled, which Cambior attributed to the changing of the liners in the semi-autogenous grinding and ball mills and the installations required for the secondary crushing circuit.

Gold recovery during the third quarter averaged 89.8%. The company projects improved recoveries during the fourth quarter when it will commission the secondary crushing circuit and the gravimetric circuit and will increase the capacity of the activated carbon recovery circuit.
