BHP inks deal with Belgians

A marketing consulting agreement has been reached between BHP Diamonds and Belgium-based IDH Diamonds, an established diamond dealer.

BHP Diamonds, a unit of Broken Hill Proprietary (BHP-N), holds a 51% interest in the Ekati diamond mine in Lac de Gras, 300 km north-east of Yellowknife, N.W.T. Dia Met Minerals (DMM-T) holds 29%, and the remainder is held privately. Mining is expected to begin in late 1998.

According to the 4-year agreement, IDH will help establish an Antwerp-based office for BHP Diamonds. The sales office will be used to gather market information and sell a portion of the diamonds produced from the Ekati mine.

No agreement has been reached regarding the sale of rough diamonds produced from Ekati. BHP is still investigating possibile routes for marketing rough diamonds.
