AMF eyes merger with Nord

Dallas-based America Mineral Fields (AMZ-T) has entered discussions to merge with Nord Resources (NRD-N). Both companies have interests in Africa.

AMF is engaged in several joint ventures with large mining houses in such countries as Democratic Republic of the Congo, Angola and Zambia.

Nord owns a half-interest in Sierra Rutile, the world’s largest titanium mine, in Sierra Leone. Since 1995, the operation has been closed as a consequence of political turmoil in the West African nation. However, the company is in the process of arranging financing to restart the mine.

AMF is 42%-owned by Jean Raymond Boulle, who controls a 28.5% interest in Nord.
