Amax shares prize with universities

The 1992 Du Pont/Conoco Environmental Leadership Award, presented for environmental excellence in the U.S. mining industry, was recently awarded to Amax Gold. The company was one of five nominees that had demonstrated a special awareness of and commitment to environmental excellence.

The judging was done by a 5-member selection committee comprised of legislative, governmental and environmental leaders actively involved in environmental issues that affect mining.

Criteria for the selection included mining reclamation and commitment to wildlife as well as water-quality protection.

Included with the award is a US$50,000 grant from Du Pont/Conoco. Amax dispersed the grant to the Mackay School of Mines, the University of Nevada at Reno and the University of Alaska at Fairbanks.
