Algeria takes bids for land

The Algerian government is seeking tenders for diamond exploration on a 542,000-km section of land running along the borders of Mali, Mauritania and Morocco and which stretches northeast beyond the city of Adrar.

Included is an 11,000-sq.-km area on the Eglab Shield, near the border of Mauritania. This area will be the only region open to both diamond and gold exploration.

Sections of land will be sold to the highest bidder upon closing at the end of July. Bids for less than 15% of the total available land package will not be accepted.

Prospective bidders are allowed to examine the geological maps at the Ministry of Mines in Algiers. A copy of the maps and data is available for US$10,000, or US$2,000 per line km.

For more information, contact the National Bureau of Geology and Mineral Exploration at 1 (203) 24819929.
