South African mining house Johannesburg Consolidated Investment (JCI) is constructing a new underground chrome mine at its existing operations at Thorncliffe, near Lydenburg, South Africa.
Development at the mine, which taps proven chrome reserves of about 27 million tonnes to a depth of 300 metres, is expected to boost the underground mine’s current annual capacity of 250,000 tonnes to 1 million tonnes.
Underground reserves are expected to meet the requirments of the Lydenburg smelter for the next 30 to 40 years at present capacity.
