Three deposits of hematite ore, two of which are high-grade and suitable for direct treatment by bessemer processes, and altogether containing an estimated potential of 1,000,000,000 tons, are described in a report by Dr. J. A. Retty. Retty is geologist for the Labrador Mining & Exploration Co.. The report covers results of the past season’s investigation of the company’s concessions in Labrador. Publication of the report has attracted dominion- wide attention. The deposits are at Sawyer Lake, Ruth Lake and Attikamagen in a slice of former Canadian territory which was awarded Labrador in 1927 by a judgment of the judicial committee of the Privy Council. The iron consequently comes within the jurisdiction of Newfoundland, although capital for the present investigation is being supplied by Ontario and Quebec interests. Reprinted from The Northern Miner, November, 1938.
