U. S. MARKETS – NOV. 18-24

U. S. stock indices were mixed during the Nov. 18-24 trading session. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 170 points, or 2.1%, to 8,443; the S&P 500 Index rose 1 point, or 0.1%, to 852; and the Nasdaq lost 10 points, or 0.7%, to 1,472. Precious metal indices staged a rally, as investors piled into gold, anticipating the inflationary effects of government bailouts and central bank money injections.

The Amex Gold Bugs Index moved up 48 points, or 26.4%, to 228, while the Philadelphia Gold and Silver Index climbed 18.5 points, or 24.3%, to 95.

Gold majors Barrick Gold, Newmont Mining, Anglogold Ashanti and Goldcorp were all up on the back of a rising gold price, as were mid-tier miners Kinross Gold, Agnico-Eagle Mines and Randgold Resources.

Silver company stocks also moved up. Silver Standard Resources gained US81 to US$8.95; Coeur d’Alene Mines rose US11 to US62; and Hecla Mining added US58 to US$1.94. Platinum miner Stillwater Mining also gained, climbing US35 to US$2.70. Reversing the precious metal up-trend was NovaGold Resources, which crashed US$1.52 to US58.

Along with precious metal prices, the uranium spot price also moved up, gaining US$5 to US$53 per lb. uranium oxide. Heavyweight Cameco rose US$1.65 to US$15.90, while mid-tier producer Denison Mines lost a penny to US$1.10, and Uranium Resources lost US21 to US$57.

Diamond miner and jewelry retailer Harry Winston Diamond slid US$1.65 to US$4.75 on fears that the recession will crimp sales of luxury goods. There are also reports that rough diamond prices have declined by 25% since September.

Potash and fertilizer stocks were generally down, with Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan, Agrium and Mosaic Co. all registering losses. Intrepid Potash reversed the trend, adding US7 to US$17.56.

Coal issues were mostly down after coal prices fell in Australia and China on lower demand. Coal majorsPeabodyEnergy, Arch Coal, Alpha Natural Resources and Massey Energy all fell, while Consol Energy gained US12 to US$24.88.
