Peruvian kidnapping resolved

A Peruvian journalist, Duber Mauriola, who was recently kidnapped from a small town in northern Peru, has been released by his abductors.

Mauriola was forced to walk for 10 hours before being beaten and tied to a post in the remote community of Huancacarpa. The peasants that held him agreed to let him go when he promised he would be more objective in his reporting.

Police negotiated with the mob and agreed not to press charges against them; however, four people, including one woman who had also been briefly abducted and then turned over to police, have been arrested for inciting the kidnapping.

Villagers are worried about the possible contamination of their land by Monterrico Metals‘ (MNA-L) Rio Blanco copper project. The detained woman is a local environmental activist.
