Record diamond output at Argyle

The Argyle mine in western Australia, the world’s largest producer of diamonds, turned out a record production in 1991 of 35 million carats, Ashton Mining of Melbourne reports.

Ashton, which has a 40% interest in Argyle, last year finalized a new 5-year contract with the Central Selling Organization (CSO), the world’s foremost diamond marketing group.

Ashton says the world diamond market was generally subdued during 1991, with rough diamond sales by the CSO totalling US$3.93 billion, down from US$4.17 billion in 1990. Affecting the market were the Persian Gulf war, financial and political difficulties in India and economic downturns in many of the major diamond-consuming countries, the company says.
