William Alan Moore, a past president of the Mining Association of Manitoba, has died. He was 81.
Born in Toronto in 1917, Moore graduated from the University of Toronto with a degree in mining engineering. He worked briefly for an aluminum company in Arvida, Que., before enlisting in the Canadian army.
During the Second World War, Moore served with the Royal Canadian Engineers in the Aleutians, Italy and northern Europe before being discharged in 1945. He was wounded twice and decorated seven times.
Upon his return to Canada, Moore began working for Lakeshore Mines in Kirkland Lake, Ont. A year later, he joined Lamaque Mines in Bourlamaque, Que., as shift boss and later mine captain. In 1951, Moore became the underground superintendent of the Golden Manitou mine in Quebec. He became the mine manager at the namesake Ontario operation of Renabie Gold Mines in 1956.
Moore returned to Toronto in 1968 to assume the position of project manager with Macassa Gold Mines. In 1973, he relocated to the Manibridge mine of Falconbridge in Wabowden, Man., where he rose from general superintendent to mine manager. He was transferred in 1975 to the Giant gold mine in the Northwest Territories. There, he rose from mine manager to general manager. He retired in 1982.
A lifetime member of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum, Moore served as president of the Mining Association of Manitoba in 1974.
