Six of the world’s largest gold producers, together with three manufacturers of sodium cyanide, have pledged their commitment to the International Cyanide Management Code (Code).
The voluntary program provides guidance for the use and management of cyanide at gold mines around the world (sodium cyanide is an essential chemical used in the production of gold) and reaches beyond the requirements of most governments and regulatory agencies.
The mining companies committed to the program — AngloGold Ashanti, Barrick Gold, Kinross Gold, Newmont Mining, Placer Dome, and Rio Tinto — are responsible for 30% of the gold produced worldwide. As well, three cyanide producers are participating: Cyanco, CyPlus and DuPont.
The Code was developed under the auspices of the United Nations Environment Programme and the International Council on Metals and the Environment. It is administered by the International Cyanide Management Institute, a non-profit organization.
