OBITUARY (September 16, 1991)

A longtime member of the Canadian mining community, Denis Bridger, ACSM, PEng, died recently at White Rock, B.C.

Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1922, Bridger’s mining career began in Africa where he was employed at several mines after completing studies at the Camborne School of Mines in Cornwall, England.

Bridger immigrated to Canada in 1952, and worked for Noranda Mines in Noranda, Que., where he remained for 18 years. He then moved to Timmins, Ont., where he worked at the Hallnor and Aunor mines before returning to Hallnor mine as manager. By this point, he and wife Mary had three sons. In 1960, Bridger moved to Matagami, Que., to open up the Orchan and New Hoscoe mines.

In 1969, Bridger accepted a position in London to work as a consulting engineer for Consolidated Goldfields. In 1979 he returned to Canada to become Selco’s vice-president of mining and was involved in construction of Les Mines Selbaie, a coal plant in Nova Scotia and the Hope Brook mine in Newfoundland. Bridger retired in 1987.
