Field trips planned in Timmins

A conference on ore deposits at depth, to be held at the McIntyre Community Centre in Timmins, Ont., from Sept. 23-26, will feature the following field trips:

— LaRonde mine (northwestern Quebec) — Participants will go underground to examine the geological setting and alteration of the Archean lode deposit. The trip is scheduled for Sept. 22 and is limited to 15 people. Benot Dub of the Geological Survey of Canada will give a talk on deep gold mining in the Doyon-Bousquet-LaRonde camp

— Garson mine (Sudbury, Ont.) — This expedition will focus on ore deposit characteristics of the Sudbury Basin and various features of footwall and contact mineralization. The event will be held Sept. 22 and is limited to 12. Peter Lighfoot of Inco Technical Services will discuss the nickel/copper/platinum-group-metal sulphide ore in the Sudbury melt sheet.

— Kidd Creek (Timmins) — The D mine will soon be the world’s deepest base metal producer, at 10,500 ft. Participants will examine underground stratigraphy, and a specially designed crosscut will allow for examination of lithological units that host the copper-zinc-silver mineralization. The trip is scheduled for Sept. 23 and is limited to 15. Harold Gibson of Laurentian University’s Mineral Exploration Research Centre will discuss the Kidd Creek deposit.
