Sun River eyeing production from Arizona mine (February 06, 1989)

Exploration to date on the former producer has resulted in a reserve calculation of 734,095 tons with a weighted average grade of 0.201 oz gold per ton across an average width of 15.7 ft. The reserves were calculated in the area of underground workings of the mine between the 400 and 950-levels.

The company said the reserves were defined from data obtained from 10,000 ft of underground workings and some 10,000 ft of diamond drilling. Inferred reserves in a parallel zone were estimated at 650,000 tons, with the deposit open along strike.

The property is also reported to have other known parallel zones located within the 40 patented and located claims which cover some 15,000 ft of favorable strike length. According to Thomas Tough, president, these zones represent “additional potential reserves.”

Tough said the company is now rehabilitating the underground workings which are accessed by two main shafts and a ventilation shaft. With competent vein material and the wall rock in andesites, ground conditions are reported to be good. Underground work this season is expected to generate data for a formal feasibility study.

The property is reported to be underlain by the favorable Oatman Formation consisting of latite flows, latite tuffs and flow breccias, with vein structures of quartz-calcite- adularia containing fine-grained free gold. Metallurgical recoveries are expected to be in the 96-98% range achieved by previous operators, as the ore is readily amenable to conventional cyanide recovery methods.

The Oatman camp produced 3.8 million tons of ore averaging 0.58 oz gold and 0.17 oz silver per ton from 1897 to 1942, mainly on the Tom Reed and Gold Road veins. The United Western Mine, which is located on the Tom Reed vein system, produced 40,000 tons averaging 0.30 oz gold prior to 1940. Ore was mined using horizontal cut-and-fill on the wider sections of the orebodies, and shrinkage and open stope methods on narrower sections.

Based on a recent positive pre- feasibility study, Sun River Gold Corp. (VSE) is projecting a production rate of 400 tons per day for its United Western Mine gold deposit located near Oatman, Ariz. The company is currently examining various methods to finance the readily accessible project through to production.
