Calgary-based Varna Gold (ASE) says it has encountered some encouraging gold values at its wholly- owned Mings Bight property on Newfoundland’s Baie Verte Peninsula.
Following a program which included channel sampling, soil sampling and ground geophysical surveys on the Lightning zone, Varna will focus on an area measuring 400×700 m.
So far, stripping and trenching on the zone has revealed the presence of a strongly chloritized and sheared mafic volcanic unit. Grab samples of strongly pyritized veins and sheared volcanics within these trenches returned values of 0.134 oz, 0.268 oz, 1.429 oz , 1.575 oz, 3.850 oz and 3.967 oz gold per ton.
Chip channel sampling across the Lightning zone has also returned a 13-m section grading 0.176 oz, with a 7-m section grading 0.24 oz gold. “The entire width of this zone has yet to be determined,” said President Gordon Barron.
Exploration has confirmed a minimum of 300 m of strike length on the Lightning zone, with rock samples returning values as high as 0.607 oz and 1.184 oz from the east end. However, it is still open in all directions.
Meanwhile, Varna is conducting a 5,000-m drill program at Mings Bight.
