Research network proposed for exploration community

The exploration research community has submitted a proposal to the federal government to assist financially in establishing a national network that would carry out fundamental targeted research on new exploration techniques and concepts.

The network, designed to be centred around three cities: the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, the University of Toronto and the Mineral Exploration Research Institute (MERI) in Montreal.

The 9-page document, prepared by Dr A. J. Sinclair of U.B.C., Dr E. T. C. Spooner of U of T and Dr J. Fox of MERI, was submitted to the Network of Centres of Excellence in Ottawa on Sept 26. It details a plan which would cost $21.5 million over four years to establish the network.

A total of $20.4 million would come from the federal government and $1.1 million from industry, the document states.

Projects include developing new geophysical technology, including enhanced electro-magnetic surveys, high-frequency seismics; new geochemical technology, including 0ultra-sensitive analytical techniques, low-temperature landscape geochemistry and models for hydraulic dispersion. New guides to exploration would also be developed through detailed case history research.

The proposed network would work under the direction of a board of directors which will appoint a managing director to implement policies. A scientific advisory committee would review grant applications from project leaders.
