News out of Australia has the Labor government saying it will introduce a tax on gold-mining profits in 1991. Producers of the yellow metal there haven’t paid any taxes since 1925. Australia turned out an estimated 103 tonnes of gold in 1987 (compared with 74 tonnes the year before) and ranked fourth last year in total non-Communist production behind South Africa, the U.S. and Canada.
