T I am quite fed up with the jingoist crusade of Messrs (Mel) Hurtig and (Edward) Broadbent et al, who are trying to block a free trade agreement between Canada and the United States. As a freedom-loving Canadian I can most readily assure you they do not speak for me.
The principle is the same as with Sunday shopping. Those who do not wish to trade with the Americans are quite free to refrain from doing so themselves, just as those who are against Sunday shopping are quite free to stay home on the Sabbath. But they have no right to prevent those who trade from doing so, on Sunday or any other day.
The issue would have been more easily settled had we had property rights enshrined into our Bill of Rights during the patriation of the Constitution, for it is the right of every Canadian to engage in peaceful transactions of commerce with whomever we want, whenever we want.
If a trade agreement is reached, it will be a great day not just for Wall Street and Bay Street, but for freedom. John G. King Calgary, Alta.
