CIM luncheon to focus on Collahuasi

The Collahuasi copper project in Chile will be the subject of the next luncheon meeting of the Toronto branch of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.

Thomas Pugsley, vice-president of projects and engineering for Falconbridge, will outline the exploration history and evaluation of this mega project at noon on Dec. 7.

Currently in the development stage, the project is expected to start production in 1996 as one of the world’s largest copper mines.

Design-related obstacles include remoteness, high altitude and desert climate, as well as the need for construction of substantial infrastructure.

Pugsley will also discuss the evolution of the project’s management team, as Collahuasi progressed from the exploration to the development phase.

Pugsley has been associated with the Falconbridge organization throughout his career, except for two years during the mid-1970s when he served as superintendent at Cominco’s Black Angel mine in Greenland.

Reservations for the luncheon can be arranged by calling Ben Kubica at (905) 888-1164 or Gerry Tyler at (416) 441-4902.
