SUMMARY:Investing in LatAm Mining Cumbre
DESCRIPTION:The cusp of macroeconomic reform in countries like Argentina\, a stable business environment in Chile\, plus improved support for FDI is leading to an improved outlook for the Latin American region. On top of this\, cautious optimism about improved returns from mined commodities\, in particular\, lithium and gold\, is making Latin American mining more appealing to investors. \nLatin America is also perfectly placed to take advantage of the growing demand for battery metals\, thanks to significant investments being made in electric vehicle battery development and the continuing growth in consumer electronics. Coupling this market sentiment with Latin America’s vast lithium triangle provides significant opportunities for the region’s mining companies\, governments and international investors. \nWith recent changes in governments in Peru\, Brazil and Argentina\, much of Latin America is essentially under new management with policies changing to favour the mining sector – look at the recent slashing of export taxes for mined commodities in Argentina. This all provides an improved outlook for investors\, miners and the region’s economy. \nOn the back of this improved regulatory climate and the optimism in commodities\, in particular around gold and battery metals\, the team behind Mining Indaba brings you the Investing in LatAm Mining Cumbre. This will be the only event to: \n– Attract a truly international audience of investors and financiers\n– Include large Asian mining groups\, including Chinese SOEs who are actively buying into resources on the continent or entering into offtake agreements\n– Tackle the serious issue of sustainable development while ensuring investments are profitable

SUMMARY:Money Mining & Sustainability Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Gain the Latest Insights in Business Planning\n– Releasing value through better planning decisions\n– Exploring the latest developments in optimisation for the mining industry\n– Simultaneously optimising the whole value chain: mining\, mineral processing\, logistics\, production and capital\n– Incorporating sustainability considerations: social\, political & environmental\n– Planning and optimisation with geological uncertainty and volatile metal markets\n– Operational and cost modelling techniques for optimisation\n– Theory of constraints for mining\n– Implementing an effective planning process “Money Mining” \nOverview\nEffective long term planning can enhance the value of a minerals business by 5% – 35% or significantly more. This seminar details an optimisation methodology that involves 10 distinct mechanisms\, which when applied simultaneously can produce counter intuitive results that challenge conventional thinking on how to run a mining and mineral processing business. Covering the latest developments in optimisation methods\, the subjects span mine design and scheduling\, cut-off grades and stockpiling\, plant configuration\, product specification\, logistics and capital scaling\, incorporating a broad range of sustainability considerations\, a comprehensive approach to managing risk and uncertainty\, strategic optimisation and modelling techniques\, theory of constraints as it applied to a minerals business\, advanced cost modelling\, and implementation/change-management. The result is a comprehensive approach to asset management. \nIt shows how these disciplines can take the economic view of the business and coordinate their activities to extract value that is currently concealed between the organisational silos that the management structure creates. \nIt is also relevant to equity analysts\, venture capitalists\, fund managers and investment bankers who want to better understand the drivers of value in a minerals business\, and to be able to recognise where the full potential of a business has not yet been realised. \nThe principles examined are applicable to Copper\, Gold\, Lead\, Zinc\, Iron ore\, Coal\, Diamonds\, Bauxite\, Manganese\, Platinum and other commodities. Pit\, underground and complex portfolios of assets are covered.\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nThis seminar will change forever the way\nyou look at your mining business!\n\n\n WHO SHOULD ATTEND:\nThis seminar is designed for decision makers including:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n• Senior executives\n• Directors\n• Department\, divisional or project managers\n• Professionals who are currently\, or will be\, involved\nin the technical aspects of optimisation analysis\n• Institutional investors in mining funds\n• Financial analysts\n• Project financiers\n• Geologists\n• Mining engineers\n• Process engineers and metallurgists\n• Logistics managers\n• Marketing managers\n• Finance and HR managers\n(This is not a software course.)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSEMINAR CERTIFICATE: A Certificate of Completion will be awarded to all participants completing 90% of the total seminar hours. \nOUTCOMES OF THE SEMINAR: By the end of this intensive two day programme\, you will take back to your organisation fresh views of how economic value can be generated. You will be able to recognise the real drivers of value\, and how flexibility in all parts of the value chain can be harmonised and exploited to increase value and robustness of the business in the face of uncertain resources\, technical challenges and volatile metal markets.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout your expert trainer\nGerald has more than 30 years of experience in business planning\, analysis and change management in a range of industries in Australia and internationally. SUMMARY:“Advanced Mass Balancing and Inference” Short Course
DESCRIPTION:In order to optimize a mineral processing plant there are nine steps required:\n1.	Collect data (measurement)\n2.	Collate data (into a database)\n3.	Flowsheeting\n4.	Mass Balance\n5.	Inference\n6.	Determine Operational Parameter\n7.	Model fit\n8.	Simulate\n9.	Optimise\nMass balancing is often taught using least squares minimization. Inference is generally not taught and in the absence of inference\, model fitting is rendered very difficult\, which is why mineral processing simulation is generally much more difficult than it should be.\nIn this course we focus on mass balancing and inference. Whilst mass balancing is taught initially from a conventional least squares minimization approach\, the course then discusses a probabilistic or information theory approach. Information theory is a relatively new area of mathematics which is only available to participants through this course. By using information theory one can infer ore properties at each stream in great depth (i.e. multi-mineral particle distributions); thereby providing the basis for later steps (particularly modelfitting).

SUMMARY:“Advanced Excel VBA for Engineers and Scientists” Short Course
DESCRIPTION:More than 90% of quantitative professionals (inclusive of Engineers\, scientists and analysts) use Excel at a basic level. Yet possibly less than 10% would have received any guidance on how to use Excel effectively. Hence many professionals use Excel in a manner that much of their work is not shared effectively with their colleagues leading to a significant loss in productivity.\nIndeed there are ‘Horror stories’ where poor Excel management has lead to millions of dollars in direct losses through wholesale loss of data and models.\nThe course focuses on providing a strategy to ensure that Excel is used efficiently. At the end of the course participants will be invited to estimate the efficiency gain that is provided by using the strategies of the course.

SUMMARY:Empirical Design Methods For Underground Mines
DESCRIPTION:The ultimate objective of the course is to assist the mine operator in making decisions employing sound geotechnical input with reference to case histories for relevance to safety\, weak rock mass assessment\, reduction in dilution\, and backfill. \nThis course provides the operators of underground mines with the tools required to make on site pillar and opening stability assessments in order to ensure a safe and cost effective mine operation. Tools for assessing opening stability are provided. Empirical methods for considering the complex interaction of stress\, opening geometry\, structure\, and rock mass are provided. Ample time is given for solving stability problems and participants are strongly encouraged to bring case histories or questions from their own operations. \nCase history data brought to class should include stope or pillar geometry\, depth\, and estimated stress levels as well a description of the rock mass and photos as possible. \nParticipants will learn how to: \nmake decisions on site stability assessments of openings and pillars;\ndevelop an understanding of the critical field data required for stability assessment;\njudge the influence of rock mechanics on the stability of planned openings; and\nunderstand the influence of rock mechanics on overall mine design.\nFor details of topics covered see the course schedule. \nOver four hundred participants throughout North America\, South America\, Africa\, Europe\, Asia and Australia have taken this course over the last twenty years; it is recognized by mining operations in North America as providing “common core” training for onsite personnel in the field of rock mechanics. \nPeople interested in this course may also want to register for Rock Mass Characterization for Mine Design\, scheduled to run in the same week.

SUMMARY:Rock Mass Characterization for Mine Design
DESCRIPTION:The purpose of this course is to provide mine staff the tools required to effectively gather geotechnical data for rock mass classification and rock mechanics design calculations. The majority of rock falls in mine operations are structurally controlled. Design is largely controlled by existing structure. It is critical that site characterization be performed so as to identify the structural factors that would affect rock slope angles\, drill and blast design\, support requirements\, resultant dilution and span design\, etc. A good understanding of rock mass structure forms the basis of rock mass classification which is used in the majority of rock mechanics design methods. \nUpon completion of the course the participants will be able to gather geotechnical data\, either from rock cuts\, drifts or core\, and process the information for subsequent analysis. The focus of the course is towards gathering information for purposes of analysis and design. The goal is to use effective mapping techniques to obtain data that can be used as input for any of the established rock classification systems. All of the commonly used classification values such as Barton’s Q and Q’ systems\, Bieniawski’s RMR\, Laubscher’s MRMR and Hoek’s GSI systems will be covered. \nThis course will include a half-day underground mapping and rock classification tour at Britannia Mine\, and a half-day surface mapping and rock classification field trip on the outskirts of Vancouver. \nPeople interested in this course may also want to register for Empirical Design Methods For Underground Mines\, scheduled to run in the same week.

SUMMARY:Analysis of Mining Financials
DESCRIPTION:This course will enable you to develop an awareness of the relevant financial information you can discover about a mining corporation from its audited financial statements. You will also have an appreciation for how accountants are challenged with exercising professional judgment on qualitative issues involving alternative accounting standards\, balanced with a need for numerical precision. You will recognize that professional judgments included in financial assessments are similar to those made in demonstrating probable and proven mineral reserves. \n“Analysis of Mining Financials” uses the business environment in the mining industry as a relevant context for understanding the financial statements of mining corporations. It isolates select accounting aspects as being fundamental to your becoming an informed reader of audited financial statements . . . including balance sheets\, income statements\, cash flows statements\, statements of shareholders’ equity and the audited notes. Examples of financial statements of both large and small mining companies are used and analyzed to illustrate these fundamentals. \nThe course draws on credible sources to highlight relevant characteristics of accounting for mining. The objective of this material is to identify some prominent aspects of financing the corporate mining strategy\, delve into the distinct areas where there are issues in accounting for the mining industry\, and summarize the risks that are inherent in understanding the financial statements of those involved in mining. The course provides the tools to establish a profile of a company’s overall financial status and identifies the attributes that contribute to financial health and flexibility. \nParticipants are advised to bring a laptop computer (with MS Excel).

SUMMARY:Canadian Mining Expo
DESCRIPTION:Timmins Mine Expo regarded as a must-see trade show \n\nBy LEN GILLIS\n\n\n\nThe Big Event\, Northern Mines Expo which opened at the McIntyre Community Building in Timmins is becoming well known as Canada’s largest gold mining show. More than that however it is also becoming known as one of the must-see and must-go industrial trade shows in Canada.\n\nThat’s according to several exhibitors who have made the trip to Timmins to put their goods and services on display\, because they know that all the major players in the mining and mining supply industries will be looking.\n\nDeborah Brideau\, of the University of New Brunswick (UNB) in Fredericton said she takes part in about a dozen industrial trade shows every year. She is the Marketing and Sales lead for the UNB Online Occupational Health and Safety Programs.\n“The people at the industrial trade shows\, we talk to one another. And we were told that the Timmins mining show is one of those shows we should take part in\,” said Brideau.\n\nShe said health and safety programs are in demand across Canada\, especially in resources industries such as oil and gas\, and now mining. She said UNB is internationally recognized for its health and safety programs and needs to maintains a strong presence in the marketplace.\n\n“We’ve been to other mining shows\, but the Timmins show is one that people are talking about. Everyone in the mining industry is represented here\,” she said.\n\nBrideau added the UNB online courses cater to many health and safety professionals already established in industry\, but might need an occasional refresher course\, or a specialized course. She said it is critical to keep in touch with that market.\nJason Levesque and his partner Denise Coulombe\, both of Sudbury\, were at the mine expo to showcase Sluice Inc\, a business that sells hats and clothing products that feature a mining motif.\n\n“We are here to show off our products and see if miners are interested to show themselves off as miners. That’s what we specialize in\,” said Levesque. He said he knows that miners are usually proud of the work they do and so he has a line of goods that fit that scheme.\n\nLevesque said he has taken part in the Sudbury mining show but now sees that the Timmins mine expo is larger than he expected.\n\n“Yeah\, it’s a big event here in Timmins. There’s lot of miners and mining companies in town coming by. I figured it would be a good event for us.”\n\nLevesque is a Sudbury-based artist who is also a hardrock miner. He said he’s confident the products will sell themselves\, once the business becomes better known. He said that’s why he signed up for the Timmins show. Selling merchandise is not the only benefit he said. He was also handing out scores of business cards for www.sluice.biz for online marketing.\n\nTimmins Mayor Tom Laughren\, who is a big fan of the show because of the heavy equipment displays\, said he was pleased to see that the show has grown significantly in the past 10 years. He said the mining expo features the latest technology in the mining industry and that in itself will attract more people who want to see what’s new in the marketplace.\n\nAlong with heavy equipment\, the show features every conceivable type of supply from boots\, to coveralls\, to mining cap-lamps\, to shovels\, to drill bits\, to ventilation tubing to explosives.\n\nThe expo also features a mining related jackleg drilling competition\, which seems to be a crowd-pleasing event\, although jackleg drilling is not as common in modern mining as it once was.\n\n“This is not just a Timmins event. This is a regional event\,” said Laughren\, who referenced the positive financial impact the show has for the hotel and restaurant industry in Timmins.\n\nLaughren said all the hotels rooms in Timmins are booked and some of the trade show participants have booked hotel rooms in such places as Kapuskasing and Temiskaming Shores.\n\nLaughren said many of the exhibitors who have been in the Timmins show in the past have returned to Timmins because of the business they contacts they established during the mine expo.
