SUMMARY:Valuation of Mineral Projects Based on Technical and Financial Modelling
DESCRIPTION:This course aims to enhance an understanding of the business of mining. Actual operating mine valuations are a central focus of the course. \nThe basics of quantitative finance and the key interface with the accounting cash flow model will be covered as part of the course. No prior knowledge is assumed but the treatment is intensive. What is assumed is that attendees have had some exposure to the technical aspects of minerals and mining. \nWorkshop sessions are also an integral part of the course delivery and use will be made of the IC-MinEval software which automates the generation of Excel™-based spreadsheets to produce models for a wide range of mineral projects. These models can be saved as fully-linked workbooks and continued use is quite independent of the software. Attendees can generate their own models which can be preserved indefinitely and have normal Excel functionality. \nParticular attention is given during the workshops to demonstrating how financial models should be set up with a rate of production appropriate to the size of the resource. Realistic associated capex and opcosts are determined with reference to CostMine. The circumstances in which it is appropriate to set up models based on a straight discount rate basis compared to including debt are outlined. In the latter case the approach to determining the appropriate level of debt will be explained. \nAnalysis will be undertaken during the workshop sessions on the financial performance indicators generated and there will also be an indication of the valuation that could be placed on the asset. Sensitivity analysis will be undertaken on key variables. Particular attention will be given to why sensitivity on variables such as mining dilution should not be considered. Consideration will also be given to the role of financial models in identify those technical variables that have the greatest impact on financial performance and then back-engineering that to the corresponding technical risk. \nDiscussion will be aimed at enhancing the level of understanding demonstrated in the analysis of the financial performance indicator generated and the degree to which conclusions can be supported by the assumptions made. \nIn addition to the presentation slides\, attendees will receive a copy of the book Metals and Energy Finance\, authored by Prof. Buchanan. \nParticipants are expected to have their own laptop computers available for this course.

SUMMARY:“A Tale of Two Husteds” lecture by Jack Anthony
DESCRIPTION:The Palmer Lake Historical Society and the Western Museum of Mining & Industry are pleased to announce the second presentation of “A Tale of Two Husteds” by Jack Anthony!\nAbout six miles south of Palmer Lake\, East Husted and West Husted sprang up as railroad “tank towns” for the Denver & Rio Grande and the Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe railroads. The two Husted depots midway between Colorado Springs and Palmer Lake became a place to pick up passengers and shipments of agricultural products. Both were thriving communities until the early 1920s. Then\, development of the United States Air Force Academy in the mid-1950s caused the remaining buildings to be either moved or demolished. Only the Reynolds Ranch House remains\, still in its original location east of Interstate 25 on the property of the Western Museum of Mining & Industry on Colorado Springs’ north side.\nJack Anthony is a graduate of the Air Force Academy. For almost 40 years\, he has served in various military\, intelligence\, and NASA roles as an engineer\, educator\, leader\, and operator. Jack successfully spear-headed the effort to have the Palmer Lake Star included on the State Register of Historic Properties. His presentation includes both sides and a short video.

SUMMARY:Quality Control of Assays
DESCRIPTION:In recent years there has been a strong international movement toward knowing and improving the quality of information used in the Mining Industry for resource/reserve estimation. In Canada\, this culminated with the implementation of National Instrument 43-101 which incorporates\, in part\, general requirements pertaining to technical matters involved in obtaining assay data and the recognition that those data are of adequate quality to both publicize and form the basis of a resource/reserve estimation. \nThis course will demonstrate how the Qualified Person is able to meet the assay quality requirements of NI43-101. Topics to be discussed include: duplicate data collection\, use of standards and blanks\, simple statistics in the evaluation of standards\, recognition of outliers\, binary graphs as an interpretive aid to evaluating duplicate data\, and displaying and analyzing data. \nEmphasis will be placed on the use of simple statistical approaches that can be used to quantify data quality. Examples will be used to illustrate how sampling error\, subsampling error\, and analytical error can be determined\, and how such results can be used as a basis for improving data quality. Reference will be made to several procedures used in the industry to quantify precision and the general pros and cons of these methods.

SUMMARY:Fundamentals of Mine Water Management
DESCRIPTION:Water management is one of the key issues facing many mines in the 21st century. In response to requests by participants in previous webcasts on mine water management\, we now present two closely related webcasts on the topic: \nWebcast 1: Fundamentals of Mine Water Management\nWebcast 2: Advanced Mine Water Management and Treatment \nThe first course\, Fundamentals of Mine Water Management\, is intended to introduce participants to the basic technical and engineering issues\, as well as the solutions of managing mine waters. In this course\, we will focus on the basics of surface water management at mines\, groundwater management at mines\, mine water balances\, mine closure water management\, and the geochemistry of mine waters. The course will review the theory of mine water management\, explore best practices\, present case histories of successful mine water management\, and consider both surface water and groundwater analysis and modeling. \nIn the light of recent failures of tailings facilities as a result of mismanagement of water\, the course will also focus on risk management as a way to deal with the many unknowns of water quantity and quality at mines. In particular\, risk management as applied to the prediction and control of a mine’s water balance will be discussed. \nThe course will benefit those new to\, as well as those experienced in\, mine water management. For those new to or entering the field of mine water management\, this course will introduce current practice\, modern technical approaches\, and best standard engineering practices. On the basis of the course\, participants will be equipped to identify and manage solutions for best practice management of the surface waters and groundwaters of the mines with which they are associated or for which they may be responsible. \nThis webcast draws on and expands on the EduMine series of courses on mine water management. In addition\, the course will draw on those parts of the EduMine courses on tailings facilities\, heap leach pads\, and mine closure that deal with surface water and groundwater issues associated with mine waste disposal facilities. \nWe invite participants to tell us\, in advance\, which topics are of the greatest interest to them\, so that we may strive to tailor the presentations to the specific interests of the webcast participants.

SUMMARY:Mine Planning - Strategy
DESCRIPTION:This webcast introduces key mine planning concepts. The drive to exploit a mineral resource\, such that it adds as much value as possible to the mining business\, requires a continual update of the mine plan and the rapid implementation of any value-adding opportunities as they arise. Planning a mining operation requires a unique approach that differs from other industries. On completion of the course\, participants will be able to recognize and use key levers in mining such as Mining Method Selection\, Process Route Selection\, Scale of Operation and Sequence & Scheduling to effectively unlock value from their mining operations. \nThis course requires participants to undertake numerous calculation based exercises to effectively demonstrate the impact of each of the key levers that will be addressed. All participants will be provided with template/pre-filled excel spreadsheets to minimize time spent on data entry. Good use of excel is therefore required.

Reference will be made to several procedures used in Industry to quantify precision and the general pros and cons of these methods.
