SUMMARY:Mine Planning - Strategy
DESCRIPTION:The drive to exploit a mineral resource\, such that it adds as much value as possible to the mining business\, requires a continual update of the mine plan and the rapid implementation of any value-adding opportunities as they arise. \nThis webcast introduces participants to financial and economic concepts such as net present value and economic theory\, and how these apply to mining versus other traditional industries. \nThe participants will then learn about 5 key technical levers in mining that can be used to evaluate avenues for creating additional value by generating alternative mine plans while incorporating the time value of money. The impact of pulling these levers will be shown through worked examples. \nOn completion of the course\, participants will be able to recognize and understand the importance of the 5 key technical levers in mining that can effectively unlock value from mining projects. \nMining method selection\nProcess route selection\nScale of operation\nSequence and scheduling\nCut-off grade policy\nThis course requires participants to undertake numerous calculation-based exercises to effectively demonstrate the impact of each of the key levers that will be addressed. All participants will be provided with template/pre-filled Excel spreadsheets to minimize time spent on data entry. Good knowledge of Excel is therefore required.

SUMMARY:Breakthrough Mining: Innovating from the Ore Body Out
DESCRIPTION:PACE Changing Mines Webinar Series with Jon Treen & Dave Richardson\, Stantec. This webinar is a discussion centered around the identification\, evaluation\, and application of innovative mine planning and mine design techniques that have the potential to drive non-linear growth in production\, while minimizing the total cost of ownership through reduced excavation sizes\, utility requirements\, and time consuming re-handling of material. We will be focusing on opportunities to unlock alternative mine designs by applying new technology in unconventional ways\, leaving the old paradigm of chasing incremental and linear gains behind.

SUMMARY:Risk Management for Mining Organisations: Tools and Techniques
DESCRIPTION:Effective risk management is integral to the success of any mine\, plant\, or corporate function. This course combines practical risk management tools and techniques\, with case studies of where they have been made to work and added value to an organization. \nRisk management is about predicting where things might go wrong and stopping them before they spiral out of control. It is also about identifying opportunities and taking steps to ensure you make use of them. \nRisk management allows us to put a framework around how we identify\, understand\, and control risks\, allowing us to manage them as a team\, be that as a shift\, or as an entire organisation. \nThe cost-benefit analysis required to ensure that your mine is resilient both technically and financially can be incredibly complex. Rarely are there enough financial or human resources available to manage all of the risks you face. Specific risk management tools and techniques can help you to prioritise where resources should be utilised\, and to proactively manage uncertainty. This helps to ensure that your mine makes best use of both the opportunities and threats it faces\, and is ultimately: resilient.

SUMMARY:Quality Control of Assays
DESCRIPTION:In recent years there has been a strong international movement toward knowing and improving the quality of information used in the Mining Industry for resource/reserve estimation. In Canada\, this culminated with the implementation of National Instrument 43-101 which incorporates\, in part\, general requirements pertaining to technical matters involved in obtaining assay data and the recognition that those data are of adequate quality to both publicize and form the basis of a resource/reserve estimation. \nThis course will demonstrate how the Qualified Person is able to meet the assay quality requirements of NI43-101. Topics to be discussed include: duplicate data collection\, use of standards and blanks\, simple statistics in the evaluation of standards\, recognition of outliers\, binary graphs as an interpretive aid to evaluating duplicate data\, and displaying and analyzing data. \nEmphasis will be placed on the use of simple statistical approaches that can be used to quantify data quality. Examples will be used to illustrate how sampling error\, subsampling error\, and analytical error can be determined\, and how such results can be used as a basis for improving data quality. Reference will be made to several procedures used in the industry to quantify precision and the general pros and cons of these methods.

SUMMARY:Fundamentals of Mine Water Management
DESCRIPTION:Water management is one of the key issues facing many mines in the 21st century. In response to requests by participants in previous webcasts on mine water management\, we now present two closely related webcasts on the topic: \nWebcast 1: Fundamentals of Mine Water Management\nWebcast 2: Advanced Mine Water Management and Treatment \nThe first course\, Fundamentals of Mine Water Management\, is intended to introduce participants to the basic technical and engineering issues\, as well as the solutions of managing mine waters. In this course\, we will focus on the basics of surface water management at mines\, groundwater management at mines\, mine water balances\, mine closure water management\, and the geochemistry of mine waters. The course will review the theory of mine water management\, explore best practices\, present case histories of successful mine water management\, and consider both surface water and groundwater analysis and modeling. \nIn the light of recent failures of tailings facilities as a result of mismanagement of water\, the course will also focus on risk management as a way to deal with the many unknowns of water quantity and quality at mines. In particular\, risk management as applied to the prediction and control of a mine’s water balance will be discussed. \nThe course will benefit those new to\, as well as those experienced in\, mine water management. For those new to or entering the field of mine water management\, this course will introduce current practice\, modern technical approaches\, and best standard engineering practices. On the basis of the course\, participants will be equipped to identify and manage solutions for best practice management of the surface waters and groundwaters of the mines with which they are associated or for which they may be responsible. \nThis webcast draws on and expands on the EduMine series of courses on mine water management. In addition\, the course will draw on those parts of the EduMine courses on tailings facilities\, heap leach pads\, and mine closure that deal with surface water and groundwater issues associated with mine waste disposal facilities. \nWe invite participants to tell us\, in advance\, which topics are of the greatest interest to them\, so that we may strive to tailor the presentations to the specific interests of the webcast participants.

SUMMARY:Mining 101
DESCRIPTION:This course covers the basic concepts of mining and mineral processing: how mines are found\, how they are built\, how the ore is processed\, how the waste is disposed\, how mineral products are marketed\, and some ideas about where mining will be in the future. \nParts of the course require some basic numeracy and high school science. However all of the material is taught in a friendly\, non-threatening manner and is quite easily understood by someone who likes to watch Nova or the Discovery Channel.
