SUMMARY:Sampling Theory\, Sampling Practices\, and Their Economic Impact
DESCRIPTION:Poor sampling\, compounded by poor laboratory subsampling\, leads to questionable geostatistics\, and generates severe conciliation problems between the geological model\, the mine\, and the plant estimates. These problems also affect the price of commodities and the validity of environmental assessments. The result is a huge money loss for the company involved\, evolving later in likely litigation. It is of key importance for geologists\, miners\, metallurgists\, chemists\, and environmental specialists to extract maximum information from the available data\, as large investments and crucial decisions depend on it.

SUMMARY:“Advanced Excel VBA for Engineers and Scientists” Short Course
DESCRIPTION:More than 90% of quantitative professionals (inclusive of Engineers\, scientists and analysts) use Excel at a basic level. Yet possibly less than 10% would have received any guidance on how to use Excel effectively. Hence many professionals use Excel in a manner that much of their work is not shared effectively with their colleagues leading to a significant loss in productivity.\nIndeed there are ‘Horror stories’ where poor Excel management has lead to millions of dollars in direct losses through wholesale loss of data and models.\nThe course focuses on providing a strategy to ensure that Excel is used efficiently. At the end of the course participants will be invited to estimate the efficiency gain that is provided by using the strategies of the course.

SUMMARY:“Advanced Mass Balancing and Inference” Short Course
DESCRIPTION:In order to optimize a mineral processing plant there are nine steps required:\n1.	Collect data (measurement)\n2.	Collate data (into a database)\n3.	Flowsheeting\n4.	Mass Balance\n5.	Inference\n6.	Determine Operational Parameter\n7.	Model fit\n8.	Simulate\n9.	Optimise\nMass balancing is often taught using least squares minimization. Inference is generally not taught and in the absence of inference\, model fitting is rendered very difficult\, which is why mineral processing simulation is generally much more difficult than it should be.\nIn this course we focus on mass balancing and inference. Whilst mass balancing is taught initially from a conventional least squares minimization approach\, the course then discusses a probabilistic or information theory approach. Information theory is a relatively new area of mathematics which is only available to participants through this course. By using information theory one can infer ore properties at each stream in great depth (i.e. multi-mineral particle distributions); thereby providing the basis for later steps (particularly modelfitting).

SUMMARY:Practical Steelmaking and Casting
DESCRIPTION:Manufacturing process in steel industry undergoing changes for making steel better and better in terms of quality\, cost & efficiency. Advance melting techniques like Ladle Metallurgy play an important role in this direction. The focus is to get steel of higher strength/weight ratio along with longer life. This has enabled designer to make product with less section thickness for higher efficiency and less environmental pollution. This workshop has been designed to give insight of various steel making and casting processes from industry point of view. It covers evolution of various steel making processes\, their operation and limitation and latest development on making clean steel through various secondary refining treatments. Continuous casting process is covered for making bloom and billet which are used in rolling mills for long and flat products. Steel Casting plays an important role and cast products are integral part in all industries. Manufacturing of steel castings\, particularly resin bonded sand casting process is covered to get insight of casting processes. For better understanding of steelmaking and casting process\, some important fundamental metallurgical concepts are also covered along with examples.

SUMMARY:Project Management for Mining
DESCRIPTION:Project Management for Mining is a 3-day practical course focused on the successful delivery of mine development projects. Primary emphasis is placed on major greenfield mine development\, but the information presented is fully applicable to brownfield project undertakings. \nThe course teaches project management best practices\, and how they are woven together from initial mineral resource identification on through the project stages of opportunity\, viability\, planning\, execution\, and completion\, to delivery of a sustainable operating property. The course focuses on the key steps in each stage that must be properly executed to achieve project success.

SUMMARY:"Metallurgical Testwork\, Interpretation & Process Design" Short Course
DESCRIPTION:The metallurgical testwork program is generally the most important critical path item for process design of a circuit and if it is not implemented in a well-structured and framed way by an experienced subject matter expert it can become the main reason of a mining project fatal flow.\nNot two ore bodies are the same. Although development of a suitable process flowsheet to treat an orebody appears to be a relatively straightforward\, selecting the optimum process whilst maintaining the maximum recovery and revenue is a complex task.\nAspects of metallurgical test program ranging from initial sample selection and ore characterisation to understand metallurgical response of an ore to complex pilot tests. It is necessary to develop metallurgical testplan that can cater for the variability in the orebody\, whilst still providing optimum economics on the majority of the process plant feed. This course will provide the participants with the knowledge to:\n•	Why and what metallurgical testwork?\n•	Developing metallurgical testwork\n•	Identify the testwork requirement\n•	Definition of the laboratory testwork appropriate for the study type and sampling requirement\n•	Test results and data interpretation\n•	Sample variability and pilot tests\n•	Process circuit design and flowsheet development based on testwork outcome\n•	Risk and mitigation in testwork
